The history of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall begins around 245 million years ago, in a sea. Countless particles of sand and others were deposited and solidified into rock. The sea disappeared, and rivers shaped the impressive rocky landscape of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall we see today. Located on this outstanding geological heritage, a diverse and valuable natural and cultural heritage came into being. The task of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is to preserve this heritage and to develop our region sustainably. At all times, the central focus of our actions is the people. We want to achieve these aims by concentrating our work on three areas: Discover the region | Support services | Projects Under the heading of “Discover the region”, we provide information about our region, we raise awareness of our heritage and of sustainable development, and we offer a wide range of activities. Our staff are available for residents, businesses and communities of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall to provide various free support services. Practical initiatives are being implemented through various projects: for instance, an energy cooperative has been set up, enabling the local population to collaborate in the sustainable development of the region, and every year several hundred fruit trees are planted in order to preserve our meadow orchards. The numerous mills along its rivers and streams gave its name to the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall (“Valley of the millers”). Imposing rocks, deep valleys and extensive plateaus: the Luxembourg sandstone characterizes the region and has made it known beyond its borders. Here in the east of the Grand Duchy, on the border with Germany, 11 municipalities with a total area of 256 km2 and around 25,800 inhabitants joined to form a Nature and Geopark. The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall – a special purpose association of member municipalities and the state The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is a special purpose association (“syndicat mixte” / mixed administration union) of the municipalities and the state. The list of members and the composition of the board (committee) can be found here. It was established by the Grand Ducal Regulation of March 17th, 2016. The Grand Ducal Decree of June 10th, 2016 governs the management of the Nature & Geopark for a term of 10 years. What is a Nature & Geopark? Nature and Geoparks support the sustainable development of a region – this means that social, ecological and economic issues are taken into account equally. This can only be implemented together with the people who live and work in the region, or who visit our region. People are at the centre of the Nature & Geopark idea. A Nature & Geopark is not a protected area. Nor should they be confused with national parks, where nature conservation takes priority. In a Geopark the particular regional geology features are also highlighted. The geology shows how landscapes are created, which rocks and raw materials occur in the underground and how geology and soils influence land use.

Rue du Château | L-6313 Beaufort
The medieval castle of Beaufort was built between 1050 and 1650 and has four construction phases. Walter of Wiltz was the first Lord of Beaufort. From the second half of the 18th century onwards, the castle was no longer inhabited. The castle fell into disrepair and was used as a stone quarry by the local inhabitants. In 1928, the new owner of the castle, Edmond Linckels, had the debris in the parts of the castle that had not been inhabited for more than 300 years removed and the weeds that were growing everywhere. After extensive restoration work, the ruins were opened to the public in 1932. Both the medieval castle and the later-built Renaissance palace have been under monument protection since 1988.

The Municipal Koenraad Bosman Museum (Museum of Art and Urban History) is named after the Dutch museum patron, the engineer and entrepreneur Koenraad Bosman (b. 1918/d. 2000). The two-story, five-axis building from around 1850 with the new extension includes 418 square meters of exhibition space. The house has two main focuses: art and the city's history. Under the museum building there is an accessible casemate for lighter guns, built around 1500.
Zur Windmühle 6, 46459, Rees
It is a stone flour mill of the tower mill type. On the ground floor there is an entrance for carts with grain. The hood can turn itself in the right direction by means of a self-tilting mechanism. The height from the mill to the top of the roof is seventeen meters. The blade cross has a diameter of approximately 22 meters. The diameter of the hull on the ground floor is six meters. The blades are propeller blades designed by Kurt Bilau. The mill has been owned by the same family since about 1870, but has changed names a few times. From Hermanns-Mühle to Rosenbaum-Mühle and finally Scholten-Mühle. This was because a few times there was only a daughter who could take over the mill and she then took her husband's name. From 1885 to 1914, the mill was assisted by a steam generator on windless days. Between 1914 and 1950 a gas turbine was used for this. The last full-time miller was Johannes Scholten. He died in 1963, after which the mill was decommissioned. The Scholten mill is privately owned and is used as a flour mill and bakery. The mill takes part in the annual open mill days on Pentecost Monday. Grain is occasionally ground and the flour is baked into bread in the baking house's ovens. The mill is open on Saturdays during the summer months and can also be visited by appointment.
